About Government General Degree College, Kushmandi
Government General Degree College at Kushmandi is one of the latest colleges established by the Government of West Bengal in Kushmandi Block of Dakshin Dinajpur. This district, situated in the northern part of West Bengal, has a long political history by its name. After the partition of India, the erstwhile undivided Dinajpur district was bifurcated. While approximately two third of the Dinajpur district was included in East Pakistan (present Bangladesh), the remaining portion became a part of India renamed West Dinajpur. Again on the 1st April of the year 1992, for the sake of proper administrative expediency, West Dinajpur was further subdivided into Uttar (North) Dinajpur and Dakshin (South) Dinajpur. Apart from its interesting historical background, this prosperous district is rich in mythology, history and archaeology. The Block Kushmandi also has a colourful religious, cultural and natural heritage. Handicrafts like Mask, Dhokra and folk culture like Khanar Gaan, Mokha Dance underscore the block's prestigious position in our famous Bengali cultural heritage. Local legends say that Tulaipanji rice, now internationally famous for its taste and aroma, was originally produced only in the Valley of the local Tulai River. Demographically the area is combined with both the Hindu and Muslim communities.
With all the rich folk culture and awe-inspiring handicrafts, Kushmandi Block somehow lacked in the field of higher education. To fulfill this lack and to provide deserving students with a better opportunity for higher education, the Govt. of West Bengal has come forward with the dream of the Government General Degree College at Kushmandi. Though the institution received Government approval on 28th February 2014, the academic session started in 2015-16.
